My teeth hurt when I wake up, how can I stop them from shifting?

I lost my retainer 2 years ago and my teeth are doing pretty well except for the bottom row. They seem to be shifting a but and everytime I wake up they hurt because of the pressure that is exerted on them during the night. How can I stop this from happening. Please refrain from telling me to go to the orthodontist as it is out of my financial abilities. Thank You.

You need a mouth guard. you can buy them at drug stores or through your dentist. if you clench or grind your teeth at night, this can result in pain, shifting of your teeth, eventual dental damage and even headaches. its an easy preventive measure to keep your teeth as long as possible!
Reply:You are grinding your teeth. Go to the store and buy a mouth guard. You put it in boiling water to get it soft and when it cools a bit, put it in your mouth and it will form to the shape of your teeth. Wear it to bed and it will protect your teeth from grinding. They don't cost much.
Reply:I have the same problem. My bottom teeth have actually crowded because of it. Here is what I was told from my dentist, I am grinding me teeth at night and pushing my bottom teeth with my tongue. The only sure method of stopping this is to get a mouth guard. You can do this at your dentist, but you mentioned finance issues...I play hockey and have a mouth guard for that that I have actually used for sleep! Go to any sporting goods store and get a sport mouth piece. You boil them and then imprint your teeth in them...so this is kind of the same thing as the dentist will provide...not as good but good enough.

Try that out and see how you do....hope this helps!
